Emma Andijewska

06012010

This is the 26th post in our Artist of the Week series.

Emma Andijewska was born in 1931 in Donetsk. As a child Emma was plagued by frequent diseases which kept her from regularly attending school. As such much of her learning was self-taught. Her father was a chemist and inventor, and as such he was eventually shot by the Soviet authorities so that he would not share his discoveries with the Germans.

It was soon after this that Emma moved with her mother and siblings in 1943. During their stay they lived in a number of different cities including U.S. occupied Berlin. They eventually moved to Munich where in 1957 Emma was able to graduate from the Ukrainian Free University. That same year the entire family moved to New York.

In 1959 she married and in 1962 she was granted U.S. citizenship. She spent much of her time writing and painting. She was associated with a New York group of Ukrainian emigre writers with her work often being labeled as surrealist.

Currently she lives and works in Munich.
