This is the 46th post in our Musician of the Day series.

The Hothouse Flowers are an Irish rock group formed in 1985. Liam Ó Maonlaí and Fiachna Ó Braonáin, who had been friends since their school days, began performing on the streets of Dublin. They were eventually joined by Peter O'Toole and won a street entertainer award within a year.

Hothouse Flowers got their big break when Bono from U2 saw the group perform on TV. He decided to offer his support and the band released their first single "Love Don't Work This Way" on U2's Mother Records Label, which led to them being signed by London Records.

They released their first album, entitled People in 1988. It became the most successful debut album in Irish history The album gained them international recognition and it was not long before they released their second album Home in 1990.

In 1992, the band decided to have some fun and combined with Def Leopard to form the band The Acoustic Hippies from Hell. They recorded three songs which were on the second side of the Def Leopard album Adrenalize.

1994 found the band exhausted and they decided to take a year sabbatical and it turned into many years, but in 1998 the band did return and they released their fourth album Born.

In 2004, the band released it's latest album, Into Your Heart. The band continues to perform together but many of them have branched out on other projects. Liam Ó Maonlaí has released two solo records to wide critical acclaim and tours individually as well as with the Hothouse Flowers
