Remedios Varo

This is the 11th post in our Artist of the Week series.

Remedios Varo was born in 1908 and lived until 1963. She was born and grew up in Spain until the Spanish Civil War caused her to flee to Paris. In Paris she became influenced by the surrealist movement but was eventually forced to flee once again when the Nazi's invaded France. She settled down in Mexico where she began to be inspired and supported by other artists and expatriates. After 1949 she truly began to develop her art and was at the height of her career when she died in 1963.

Her paintings gain inspiration from a number of different sources such as psychology, science, femininity and even the occult. Her paintings were amazingly varied even incorporating religious elements, like her interest in the idea of the Holy Grail. The surrealist nature of her work leaves them open to interpretation and to meaning something different to everyone.
