Butch Walker

07092009
Butch Walker in his element.

This is the 26th post in our Musician of the Day series.

Butch Walker was born in 1969 and grew up in Georgia. He started to make an impression in a music world in the 1980s by playing guitar and performing in bands like Bad Boyz and Byte the Bullet. Byte the Bullet signed to Virgin Records in 1988 and they changed their name to SouthGang. SouthGang released two albums Tainted Angel and Group Therapy.

In the 90s Butch formed several bands including The Floyds and the popular band Marvelous 3. Marvelous 3 had the widely popular song Freak of the Week. The band released three albums including Math and other Problems and Hey! Album. They broke up in 2001 after separating from their label due to lack of support from it.

After the band’s break up, Butch began a solo career which proved to be more successful than his group endeavors. He released his first album Left of Self-Centered in 2002 and Letters in 2004. The albums were so popular that in 2005 he played over 200 shows between the U.S. and Japan. The following year he released The Rise and Fall of Butch Walker and the Let’s-Go-Out-Tonites.

He continues to write and produce music and albums for other artists, including Bowling for Soup’s hit Girl all the Bad Guys Want. He has produced records for Avril Lavigne, Sevendust, All-American Rejects, Pink and Lit.

He recently formed a new band called 1969 which released its first album Maya in 2008. Butch also released a solo album Sycamore Meadows and a live album Leavin’ the Game on Luckie Street. He continues to work on more music and has plans to work with Weezer in 2009 as well as some ventures with Coca Cola.
