American McGee's Alice

18082009
American McGee's Alice in a grayscale wonderland castle
This is the twelfth post in our Game of the Day series.

It is the last game I do believe I saw my brother playing on his gigantic, old, CRT monitor. The he bought for his first computer containing a 100mhz Pentium. Of course by the point he was flying through Alice, the machine was different. One which he upgraded the video card partly so he could see the dark and colorful graphics of the game!

I just beat this game two or three years ago, prior to that I had only skimmed the surface of the first couple levels. And I did it on Easy of course, because that's just how I roll. The graphics held up well despite some rough edges and non-lip-synced speaking from the Cheshire Cat. Its image and soundscapes deliver enough spark of curiosity to drive you through its leap-fest levels. From a creepy school to a creepy hedge garden maze.

Using the different weapons to cut up card people rarely got old, but much of the game is exploration and 3D jump puzzles. There isn't much to the plot and the mechanics are simplistic enough to be mocked by many reviewers, but that's also what made it more accessible to more casual gamers (an over-used term these days!). While the visual result may have been over-the-top in terms of twistedness (Strawberry Shortcake anyone?), it was still worth adventuring through.
